Video support?

Postby blouberg » Wed Nov 17, 2010 1:36 am

PlugPlayer really is a great app!

I've got my own perfect home-entertainment-system (independent from any itunes an frustrating syncing between devices) using a windows server with a upnp-shared wmp library where i can access all my media from any pc or iphone. i can output the media on any pc, the iphone itself or on an wlan-connected WD TV Live HD (even video, which i really can reccomend, costs less than 100 €) or any other upnp renderer.

the only thing i miss is that i am not able to get video-files played on plugplayer although i've tried severals files/codecs/formats. it would be a great feature to make PlugPlayer video playable. I even would pay some more money for this app!

As far as I'm aware, PlugPlayer does indeed play video. The problem might be that it is completely restricted to formats that are playable on the iPhone, I think it is only "H.264, MPEG-4 in .mp4, .mov, .m4v" (from a quick Google). If your video is not in one of these formats then you will need to pre-convert them or your media server needs to offer realtime transcoding.

Hi Csimon,

thanky you. Yes, PlugPlayer can definitely play videos, that's what i've found out in between, too ;)

Most of my videos are "windows-based" with wrong codecs, which can be rendered on my WD TV Live HD, but not on the iphone. So i've converted some videos to mpeg4 with 640x480 to get them played on the iPhone. The Problem is now, that Windows Media Player Library cannot stream mpeg4, but maybe this could work by patching the windows server and adding additional codecs. As far i have to have two versions of each video, one streamable for WD TV Live HD and one for copying it lokal to the iPhone...

So it would be very great, if PlugPlayer could support .avi videos in future. But i don't know if this is possible at all, as the iPhone itself doens't support any .avi and i don't know if PlugPlayer uses its own librarys or if it accesses the iOS librarys...
