Streaming issues

Postby Kaptemplar » Sun Oct 16, 2011 7:06 pm

OK I have the following set up on my iPhone:

I setup a couple of apps to allow me to connect to my NAS remotely using a VPN. After that I launch PP, it discovers the NAS and it allows me to stream music remotely over 3G. It works very well for the most part.

I am trying to do the same setup for the Mac OS PP app I just purchased today. I would like to be able to stream my stuff when my I am away from my home wireless network. Again I setup a couple of apps to allow me to connect to the NAS using a VPN. This time though the NAS won't show up under the servers. Here is the kicker though, if I connect to the home wireless network with the NAS and stream music AND then connect to the server using the VPN se up and try to play something, it will play. The issues seems to be that the server won't show up under PP.

I suppose that's because the device URL is still the same so once the VPN is connected, it's like nothing has changed except a momentary drop in connection.....

If that's correct, then how do I solve the discovery problem?

Once PlugPlayer discovers the server, it will store it and it should be available the next time your run the app. Are you not seeing any devices/servers when you run PP the next time on VPN?

When I run PP while in my wireless network, it discovers the server. If I run PP while in my VPN, it will not discover it. As I said earlier, I have the exact same setup in my iPhone and streaming through the VPN works flawlessly. Any ideas?

Same question: Are you seeing no devices when you start up? Or are you seeing the devices but they are not accessible?

Could the VPN connection be slow? PlugPlayer will assume the device isn't "alive" if it doesn't response within a timeout period. By default that is 1 second, but you can edit this on a device by device basis.

I know this is an old topic but I plan to start using PlugPlayer on my Mac on the road more often so I definitely gotta make it work now. I don't see the option that you mentioned in the Mac version though. The strange thing is though, that I have essentially the same setup in my iPhone 4 and it finds it just fine but in my Mac it doesn't. I think it is because in my iPhone 4 PlugPlayer may fooled into thinking that it is in the same WiFi network as the media server after connecting to the VPN but when I connect in my Mac that isn't happening.

Right click on the device name and select edit from the menu.

Can you look at the device URL and see if it works in a browser on and off VPN? Perhaps the IPs are getting mapped differently on the Mac VPN?

On VPN: I get some kind of script which I am assuming is what is supposed to happen.

Off VPN: Unable to connect.

As I said earlier, I think it is because in my iPhone 4 PlugPlayer may fooled into thinking that it is in the same WiFi network as the media server after connecting to the VPN but when I connect in my Mac that isn't happening. Anything else I can try?
